The Wrigley Company has a rich history of 'doing well, by doing right,' a principle that is at the heart of what sustainability is all about.

Sustainability at Wrigley means driving business performance by advancing the well-being of people, and the planet, now and for future generations. For more than a century Wrigley's business results have confirmed that you can do what's right and not only succeed, but also thrive as a business.

Community

Wrigley will continue to partner with the business, government and non-government organisations (NGOs) that will help us address important business issues like environmental education and sustainability, nutrition labeling regulations and health and wellness, issues which are important to our customers, consumers and other stakeholders – and are important to us and our business as well.

Whether it is providing disaster relief to the Red Cross in the wake of Samoa’s recent Tsunami or the Victorian Bushfires or helping to educate citizens on the importance of responsible litter disposal with Keep Australia and Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Wrigley will continue to be active in its communities. Each year Wrigley donates to local organisations – Hornsby Hospital and Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Rural Fire Service and will continue to partner with those organisations that can help Wrigley make a difference.

Promoting Responsible Disposal

Litter education is the only sustainable solution to effect behavioural change in citizens. To this end Wrigley has affiliations with environmental organisations around the world to educate consumers about responsible litter disposal. When the environmental organisation ‘Keep America Beautiful’ debuted in 1953, Wrigley signed on as a charter member, and today remains actively involved with this organisation. Wrigley is also affiliated with Britain's EnCams organisation, which is responsible for the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign and An Taisce, a leading environmental organisation in Ireland.

Locally Wrigley has been working with ‘Keep Australia Beautiful’ for over five years, developing and delivering environmental education programs in schools across the country. These environmental education programs have been run in more than 2,600 schools with more than 940,000 students participating.

Given the success of these programs, we are currently working with Keep New Zealand Beautiful to identify opportunities to deliver similar environmental education programs throughout New Zealand.

In 2006 in conjunction with Keep South Australia Beautiful and Adelaide City Council, Wrigley sponsored an outdoor advertising campaign executed in the Adelaide CBD, with the objective of raising awareness around littering and educating citizens on responsible gum litter disposal. The program delivered a reduction in gum littering behaviour of up to 58%.

The Wrigley Company has a long legacy of environmental conscientiousness. In 1933, in what may have been the first litter prevention campaign in the U.S., the company's second president Philip K. Wrigley began imprinting the advice to ‘use this wrapper to dispose of gum’ on the label of every stick of gum manufactured. Today Wrigley includes a responsible disposal logo or words describing the proper way to dispose of our product on all product packaging and advertising to encourage citizens to do the right thing.
