We strive to delight our consumers with great products in great packaging formats – wherever they are in the world. As we seek to deliver this commitment, we are mindful of the environmental impacts associated with packaging material and manufacture. That’s why we are reinventing our packaging formats to reduce the use of materials, such as foil in gum wrappers, plastics in bottles and paperboard. And we’re focused equally on the product inside the package, by using ingredients more efficiently and always maintaining the highest quality to make sure our products continue to delight.
With 34 brands across 180 markets, we have thousands of packaging configurations around the world. To make sure we’re designing the best package for the job, we use a scientific approach to identify and measure the sustainability impact of all ingredients that go into the end design.
We’ve reduced the amount of aluminum we use to package our products. We replaced it with a more sustainable, less carbon-intense alternative that meets our quality standards and consumer needs. To date, we’ve replaced foil wrappers with paper for BIG RED®, DOUBLEMINT®, JUICY FRUIT®, WRIGLEY’S SPEARMINT® and WINTERFRESH® Brands in the U.S., which saves 850 tons of aluminum per year.
While paper is less carbon intense than other materials, from a tonnage standpoint, we saw an opportunity to limit the amount we bring into the supply chain and, ultimately, the amount that ends up in landfill. In 2014, we implemented a pre-printed foil in production of our LIFE SAVERS® Mints roll packs sold in North America. By printing directly on the foil, in order to display our logo and product information, we eliminated the need for a paper label to be placed around the outside of our foil wrapper. This new process reduced the amount of paper in our LIFE SAVERS© Mints roll packs by more than 25%.
